How Do Cavities Start?

Stages of CavitiesYou do your best to brush and floss. You make sure that you get your dental checkups. But then, you get the dreaded news; you have cavities. How can this happen?!?

Well, the first thing to remember is don’t panic, and don’t beat yourself up over a minor setback. These things can happen, even to those with the best at-home oral hygiene. What’s important is that we discovered the cavity early, before it has gotten bigger and before more severe complications arise.

Why Do Cavities Happen?

Cavities mostly occur due to the buildup of plaque. When we eat sugar-rich foods that cling to teeth, plaque-causing bacteria begin to feast. They create the sticky substance that damages and dissolves tooth enamel, eventually creating cavities (also known as dental caries or tooth decay). Most cavities are caused by frequent snacking without brushing, drinking sugary beverages, and improper technique for cleaning your teeth.

What Happens Next?

If we notice a cavity or plaque buildup during your appointment, we’ll be sure to point out the areas where your brushing or flossing could improve. If necessary, we’d be happy to demonstrate the best technique for your daily oral hygiene. That’s the best way to prevent future cavities and the need for fillings.

If we do find caries and decay affecting your teeth, we will most likely schedule a followup appointment where treatment will take place.

If it’s past time for your dental checkup, don’t hesitate to call our office and schedule an appointment. If you are experiencing any level of pain or discomfort, it may be the symptom of cavities. Don’t wait any longer, or the problem may worsen!
